Generally, I like the Red Dragon, although it takes longer to zap weeds than I expected, and I was surprised that, the first time I used it, it destroyed the paint on the shaft nearest the flame. Also, weeds do come back within a few days. I don't know if repeated zapping will prove a more permanent solution or not. It is lightweight and easy to use -- but be careful not to get the flame too close to plants you don't want to harm!

Handy little unit

I have to say that burning weeds is fun. However, I've had a devil of a time suppressing my weeds and use a combination of torch, pulling and light applications of chemicals to control the suckers on my gravel driveway. I've used this torch for well over an hour and have yet to use up the initial propane tank. The brass control valve makes it easy to regulate the size of the flame for controlled 'killin.'
The unit balances well, is lightweight and does an adequate job of torching dandelions, crabgrass and a sprawled-out little plant that upon maturity sports nasty, finger-pokin' thorns. Plaintains seems to resist normal torching efforts and requires a full dose of 'flame-on' to kill them. For plaintains I resort to pulling because they're never too deeply rooted. However, if you want to see a plant glow like the planet Vulcan - try a large, juicy plaintain for a minute or so. :)
What impresses me most about this unit is the fact that I was able to train a high school student in minutes to kill a large patch of weeds three weeks ago on the driveway. To this day that patch remains dead...though I have to wait for the charred remains to decompose, or for me to add another layer of gravel because it looks like someone laid down a trail of charcoal dust. For $50.00 the Red Dragon is a welcome supplement to a less-invasive (chemical) way of suppressing weeds.
Cheers,
X

Our previous weed burner quit working after several years of use, so I searched, and found this. We bought it in May, and it has already failed. The gas doesn't come out like a short blue flame as it should. Instead, it burns through a bottle of gas in about 10 minutes because there's no pressure control. I will never buy from this company again. What a rip-off.

Really nothing particularly wrong with the torch. I just had not realized how dangerous it would be to use in conditions where the weather is hot, dry and windy. Even using to zap the weeds between the sidewalk squares is too risky. The idea of just passing the torch over the weeds to cause the cell walls to heat just so may be environmentally friendly but ridiculous in practice. I may try it after a soaking rain but I really need it in the Summer when it is hot and dry. It is back to the vinegar for me. I may be able to use this to melt metal if I can find a suitable crucible.

Best Father's Day Gift Ever

Comment:
I bought this for my wonderful husband as a Father's Day Gift. We live in an area where weeds are popping up all over the place. He would spend so much time spraying and then going out a few days later to pull the weeds. He always came in with sore Knees and a hurt back. One day I saw a neighbor using this so I went on-line and found it on Amazon.com. When I gave it to my Husband he said he liked it but I could tell he was not that into it. He thanked me and went out and used it. Ten minutes later he came back in the house with a big smile and told me what he thought when he first opened it. Then he told me it's "The Best Father's Day Gift Ever." He uses it all the time. We like the fact that we don't have to use poison any longer. What a time and back saver this is. I highly recommend this.
